Sometimes, in our lives, God takes us down paths we would least likely expect.
If someone had told me as little as two years ago that I would be developing a website called The Whisper of God and writing inspirational and spiritual messages, I might have thought they were crazy. But that is exactly what I find myself doing now - a lot of writing and really enjoying it.
In the back of my mind I had always had the urge to write.
At times, I seemed to have great thoughts come to me in the middle of the night but I was always too lazy to get up and write them down. I would remember the next morning some of the ideas I had but, at that point, they were for the most part gone. This went on for years. I was always more willing to give into the urge to be lazy and go back to sleep than to get up and follow the inspiration that was trying to come to me.
Again, one night not long ago, I woke up with the urge to start writing. This time I decided not to fight it and in my half-asleep state I started writing. I wrote for what seemed to be hours. I wrote long-hand and filled up a whole notepad. Then I went back to sleep.
The next morning when I woke up I read what I had written during the night and I was amazed – it was pretty good stuff!
I now had some good things written but I didn’t know what to do with them.
About a year later, I was lying in bed and all of a sudden I got the inspiration to start a website called The Whisper of God. I wasn’t even going to get out of bed to try to buy this name. I thought it would be a waste of time because all of the good website names are already taken. But the urge wouldn’t go away. So I gave in and got up at about 3 in the morning and made my way to my computer. To my amazement I found the name was available! So I bought it and here we are…
I have come to realize that the inspiration that was coming to me in the middle of the night might have been God tapping me on the shoulder. Now that I look back, I think that God might have been trying to tap me on the shoulder for quite a long time. It might just be that one night He got tired of tapping me on the shoulder and decided to hit me over the head to get my attention.
I am thankful that He didn’t stop trying to get my attention.
Sometimes I think we try too hard to fight where God is trying to take us.
We can make our plans for our life but then it’s like we’re in a little boat on a big river. We are just floating along until the river comes to a fork. You might try to steer in one direction but the water wants to take you in another.
In the past, I felt like I was wearing myself out paddling like crazy trying to go in a different direction than where the flow seemed to be taking me. Sometimes, the currents take us into rough water. But I have learned to stop spending my energy trying to avoid the rough water and to go with the flow and see where God is taking me.
So instead of fighting God’s inspiration when it comes, we need to learn to give in, go with the flow, and see where it takes us. Sometimes it turns out to be quite an incredible journey!
