I just got back home after being away for a few days. On the way home I had to drive up I-95 in the Northeast. If you know anything about this road you will know that parts of it are like driving in a Nascar race but without the rules or the sportsmanship.
While driving I noticed a car with a bumper sticker that said “Choose Civility”.
My first reaction was one of wonder: have things gotten to the point where we need bumper stickers on our cars to remind us that we should be civil to one another?
When I got home I went online and did some research to try to find out what the meaning of the bumper sticker was just in case I had read too much into it. It turns out that the sticker was made up to be just what I thought it was: to remind people to basically be nice to each other.
It may sound strange but this made me a bit sad.
I was sad to think that we now need to have bumper stickers to remind us to be civil to each other.
I am not saying the person that made this up wasn’t doing something worthwhile. In fact, I think it’s nice that an effort is being made to help make people think about their actions and their responsibility towards each other.
When I was growing up, we were taught what responsible behavior was. We were taught to treat others as we wanted to be treated ourselves. We were taught God’s word from the Bible and how God has told us we should act towards each other.
Have we started to lose God in our everyday lives? Have people never learned to know God and how He has asked that we treat each other?
We live in difficult times. We live in a time when there are people and groups trying to take God out of our everyday lives. There is always seems to be a new story that we can read or hear on the news about another lawsuit being brought to further remove God from our lives and our country.
Some want God removed from the Pledge of Allegiance. Some want God removed from our currency. God has already been erased from some of the walls of public buildings.
Maybe we need to stop erasing God from our daily lives and instead keep Him a little more involved in them.
If we had a little more God in our lives we might not need the bumper stickers.

Unfortunately, this is very true. Even our ‘friends’ are not civil any more as every one is so busy- being busy, and focusing on their wants and ‘needs’. I only hope and pray we recognize this dilemma before it becomes irreparable. As I was taught the Golden Rule while growing up, and the Serenity Prayer is one of my favorite prayers, I try(daily) to live in that fashion, and achieve it as often as I can. PLease try to treat others with respect and care. Have a good day.
